Our mentors can do it all! From working with our adult literacy program to inspiring young minds, really, the do it all! Mentors host weekly LitClubs that offer everything from help with homework to posing questions that seek out a child's creativity, such as, "if you were a superhero, what would your power be?" They work with adults who are just learning to read, catering to the specific needs of the individual. On the weekends, they help organize our "Clubs de Amigos," where adolescents discuss and put into practice ideas for improving their communities. We really would be lost without these volunteers!

Community: El Pital # of years with Un Mundo: 1 Why is this project important to you?
"What I like most about my job is working with the kids because every day they bring such enthusiasm to learning new things and that motivates me to continue working with them. I like when they treat me as their teacher and when they hug me it motivates me so much to continue teaching."

katiaTitle: Literacy Connections Program Mentor
Community: La Colorada # of years with Un Mundo: 1 Why is this project important?
"The work of Un Mundo is to expand opportunities in literacy (in our case, to all of the villages in the Cangrejal River region). Literacy should not be interpreted solely as the ability to read and write, but also the development of the technological and cognitive capacities necessary to fully involve oneself in society, and that is our work as volunteer facilitators. This will permit people the possibility of being a better citizen and a better person within our society that is advancing so rapidly. Further, education is crucial for achieving the ability to transform one's own reality."

DeverlinTitle: Literacy Connections Program Mentor
Community: Las Mangas # of years with Un Mundo: 2 What positive changes have you witnessed in the children in your community during your time as a volunteer mentor?
"It's satisfying for me to be able to share my successes. Among the kids participating in this program there seems to have been awakened an enormous curiosity and many aspirations for their lives - for them nothing is impossible. They are dreaming bigger and imagining things that they never would have before. Now they have enormous confidence in themselves and take on any challenge and have achieved impressive leadership qualities."
