Our "homestay" program is an initiative aimed at providing the context for a genuine cross-cultural experience that will not only benefit rural Hondurans economically, but also provide both the guest and host with insight into the other's culture and perspective. During the early days of Un Mundo, many volunteers who came to develop and initiate projects were housed with local families, allowing them to establish authentic personal relationships which in turn informed their ideas about how they could best be of service to the community. Host families benefited from the additional income they received through Un Mundo, and often new friendships were formed.
From 2007 until the present, Un Mundo has worked with participating families through this project on topics such as: customer service, culinary arts, providing a balanced diet, safety and security, adapting and improving living spaces, and administrative skills, among others.
Presently, we work with 11 families in El Pital, 3 in the community of Yaruca, 2 in Las Mangas and 2 in Toncontin, all of whom offer room and board at a price that is both comfortable for the volunteer or traveler, but which also significantly supplements the income for the host family.
