Introduction
Un Mundo is a non-profit organization focused on community development work.
We work primarily in rural communities located in the Cangrejal River watershed, in the municipality of La Ceiba, department of Atlántida. The majority of residents in these communities come from historically oppressed populations and have had little to no institutional contact, leading to high rates of illiteracy and reliance upon subsistence agriculture on extremely marginal lands. In our understanding of underdevelopment, our central focus is the potential of each individual. We see underdevelopment as simply the lack of basic needs, and see development work as the expansion of those liberties which improve human well-being.
Each one of our programs has a pedagogic dimension aimed at generating an understanding of the causes and effects of underdevelopment, and the necessity for collective action in the struggle for a more fulfilling and healthy life. Since our beginning in 1998 as a spontaneous outpouring of international solidarity in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch, we have evolved into an organization of depth and vision.
